July 2008 PAES Ethiopia Office

PAES obtained a certificate of registration from the Ministry of Justice of Ethiopia. Located in the Mag International Building, Bole Division Kebele 11, the PAES Ethiopia Office is in the process of launching a number of projects in the areas of food and environmental security, sustainable bioenergy, and ecosystem management.

As a member of the PAES Family, PAES Ethiopia's long term goal is to assist and encourage African societies, with Ethiopia as a priority country, to use natural resources in a manner that is environmentally and socially sustainable based on science and best practices through, inter alia, enhancing social capital, and promoting partnerships among various stakeholders at the local, regional and global levels. Its specific objectives are to:

  • Promote and support capacity development for sustainability assessments (including environmental impact, strategic environmental, environmental risk and vulnerability assessments) as tools for sound socioeconomic development decision making at the local, national, sectoral, and ecosystem levels.
  • Conduct environmental vulnerability and security assessments, as the need arises, for use by the public and government institutions.
  • Support the rehabilitation and reclamation of environmentally degraded, polluted, and mined out land and restore its productive use and also promote and support an ecosystem approach to urban development, and
  • Develop analytical tools, methodologies, indicators, and guides based on scientific studies and best practices to enhance cross sectoral understanding of linkages between environmental change, poverty, vulnerability, and instability, and thereby develop appropriate programs.
