19 - 21 January 2011 Developing the Food Security and Environmental Security Nexus

In collaboration with the Foundation for Environmental Security and Sustainability (FESS), PAES is developing a structured and policy oriented approach to addressing linkages between food security and environmental security.

In this regard, PAES participated in the Stakeholders’ Meeting on the Proposed Programme on Food security for Eastern Africa, Nairobi, Kenya, 19-21 January 2011 organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Sub-regional Office for Eastern Africa (UNECA/SRO-EA and the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD). This is a follow up of the meetings of Kigali, Rwanda 15-18 March 2010 and Bujumbura, Burundi 14-15 September 2009, which PAES was actively involved in.

The Proposed Programme on Food security for Eastern Africa has four components:

  • Marketing and trade development for agricultural, livestock and fisheries products.
  • Research and development for value addition (food processing) and inputs systems (especially fertilizers and seed systems), including collaboration in Technology Generation (Research) and Transfer (Extension).
  • Sustainable Natural Resource Management.
  • Nutrition and Social Protection, including safety nets.

For papers and detailed information particularly on issues related to the third component, i.e., Sustainable Natural Resource Management, more specifically the food security and environmental linkage, please contact:info@paes.org
