7 -26 March 2005 The Uganda Environmental Security Assessment Field Study

A joint team of experts drawn from the Foundation for Environmental Security and Sustainability (FESS), Partnership for African Environmental Sustainability (PAES), and Tulane University completed field assessment of environmental security in Africa . The Team had interviewees with close to one hundred senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community, representatives of the private sector, civil society and academic community.

The study covered review and environmental security analysis of the major sectors of the Ugandan economy: food and agriculture, water resources, land policy and management, energy and mineral resources, health, education and social welfare as well as public administration.

The Team visited northern and southwestern Uganda . In northern Uganda , the Team had extensive interviews with government officials, Paramount Chief of the Acholiland, representatives of the international development community, civil society and religious leaders. It also visited the Pabo internally displaced persons (IDP) camp and had discussions with the camp leader and other community elders.

The study is expected to be made available by the end of June, 2005.
